Gregory residents are being given a second chance to get recycling right. A new trailer, specifically made for recycling, is now parked by the city’s swimming pool and will be monitored by a security camera.

The Gregory Recycling Team of Cheryl Duimstra, Blane and Terri Bartling, Gregg Drees, and Bob Smutny worked with the City of Gregory and District III Planning and Development to apply for a grant from the South Dakota Department of Land Management. Once the grant was received, the City of Gregory paid the balance on the new trailer. In addition, the Community Foundation also gave the team a grant of $1000 for other costs associated with the project. The recycling team will be respon

The recycling team will be responsible for watching the trailer and driving it to the recycling center in Winner.

Items accepted for recycling are #1 and #2 plastics, newspapers and magazines, and cardboard.

Recyclable plastic usually comes with a little recycle symbol printed on the bottom of the container. In the center of that symbol, you will find a number 1-7, which tells what kind of plastic is used in making the container. Only #1 and #2 will be accepted at the Gregory recycling trailer. Plastic #1 will include items such as peanut butter jars, plastic pop and water bottles, microwavable food trays, and salad dressing bottles. Plastic #2 is used for items such as milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles, butter tubs, motor oil bottles, and some shopping bags.

The plastics must be clean with no caps. Please crush or flatten larger containers.

Books and phone books will be accepted in addition to newspapers and magazines, but the covers must be removed. Shredded paper will no longer be accepted.

Cardboard boxes must be broken down.

Tin, glass, aluminum cans, and plastic grocery bags won’t be accepted. The drop-off for aluminum cans will still be located by the city shop.

A garbage can will be placed next to the trailer to dispose of plastic bags used to carry items to the trailer.

The rules will be posted at the trailer. The recycling trailer was abused in the past and if this happens again, the Winner recycling center will not accept anything from the Gregory trailer. The security camera will help identify anyone who abuses the rules at this new location, so please be considerate and help keep this service available for all to use.
